Women's Health Q & A

Why are women’s health exams important?

Women’s  health exams — or well-woman exams — are an essential part of your  health. These preventive care evaluations are tailored to your body,  reproductive health, and any concerns you have at the time. Women’s  health exams are important to:

  • Check for warning signs of gynecological and breast cancer
  • Screen for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Find options for sexual dysfunction concerns
  • Treat menopause-related symptoms
  • Start or change birth control

The  purpose of women’s health care services are to ensure you’re in good  health at every age and to provide treatments if you have any health  issues.

Which type of women’s health screenings do I need?

Whether  you’re due for an annual well-woman exam or are experiencing new  symptoms, Dr. Al Family and Urgent Care providers help you throughout  every step of your evaluation. Your doctor may recommend any of the  following screenings, based on your age and health history:

  • Hormone level check (through a blood draw)
  • Blood pressure check
  • Breast exam
  • STD testing
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap smear
  • Mammogram
  • Urinalysis
  • Ultrasound

If  you want to get started on a new type of birth control, your doctor at  Dr. Al Family and Urgent Care may recommend a pregnancy test first to  ensure you aren’t pregnant. They can generally implant intrauterine  devices (IUDs) or birth control implants, or write scripts for oral  contraception, during the same visit.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a women’s health exam?

One  of the most helpful things you can do before coming in for your women’s  health appointment at Dr. Al Family and Urgent Care is to write down:

  • The first day of your most recent period
  • All concerns or questions you may have
  • Any medications you take; prescription or over-the-counter

You  should also avoid scheduling your women’s health exam during your  period, if possible, if you need a Pap test or STD screening. Menstrual  flow may affect your tests, which could result in inconclusive results.

Dr.  Al Family and Urgent Care offers comprehensive women’s health services  for teens, adults, and seniors. Call us to book your women’s health appointment  today.
